Scammer Warning
Every now and then scammers may contact you and claim that they want to buy your wedding dress. Their messages are frequently misspelled, from abroad (e.g. Nigeria), and don't "sound right", i.e. like a bride looking for a bargain. They may offer more than your asking price. They may offer payment by a certified cheque, banker's draft or some such strange idea. They may request your bank details. They probably won't want to try on your dress, claiming they are "in a hurry". Be on your guard! If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
What should I do?
- If you are at all suspicious, do not send them information, and most definitely do not send out your wedding dress until you have confirmed that the money you "received" has been safely banked and is in your bank account.
- Remember that real people who buy wedding dresses are girls who want to come over and try them on. If they do not, be suspicious! When they do want the dress, tell them that you require payment in cash.
- Copy and Paste their email address into Google and see if it comes up anywhere. It is quite likely to come up on a list of scammers like the one below.
- Men don't buy wedding dresses! So if it is a bloke, buying a dress "as a surprise", or "on behalf of a client", it probably isn't genuine.
- If you ring the phone number and the ring sounds different, e.g. a long ring, it has transferred to a foreign account. Disconnect immediately and cease all contact.
- If the phone number does not work, or says "nil", do not believe in them.
- If someone outside the UK wants you to send your dress to them, without having tried it on, it's very likely to be a scam.
- If you are already in contact with them and they have sent you a "banker's draft", you should inform the police.
- Remember that girls can be scammers too! They are the hardest to spot. If they have a long heart-rending story like the wedding dress didn't arrive and they need it despearately by Saturday, remember - they still would need to try it on and they need to pay you in CASH!
